SEND-friendly days out for families

Planning days out for families with children who have Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND) can take a bit more thought, especially when sensory needs, crowds, and unpredictability need to be considered.

The good news is that Coventry, Birmingham and the surrounding areas in the Midlands offer a wide range of welcoming attractions, from calm nature spaces to carefully adapted indoor experiences, many of which provide quiet sessions, reduced-capacity times, or specialist facilities.

The Thinktank Science Museum

One of the most popular SEND-friendly attractions is the Thinktank Science Museum in Birmingham. Offering hands-on science exhibits and known for hosting quieter sessions that reduce noise and visitor numbers, the museum makes it easier for children who prefer calmer environments while still enjoying interactive learning.

National SEA LIFE Centre

Another strong option is the National SEA LIFE Centre Birmingham. The underwater tunnels, gentle lighting, and slow-moving displays can feel naturally soothing, and quieter morning sessions are often available for those who benefit from reduced sensory input.

Birmingham’s Botanical Gardens

For families who prefer outdoor calm, the Birmingham Botanical Gardens offers a spacious, green environment with glasshouses, butterfly areas, and quieter walking routes. It’s a good choice for children who need freedom to move at their own pace without too much stimulation.

Rush UK Trampoline Park

More structured indoor play can be found at places like Rush UK Trampoline Park Birmingham, which runs SEN-focused sessions with fewer visitors and reduced noise levels.

Coventry’s Transport Museum

In Coventry, the Coventry Transport Museum offers a spacious, interactive indoor experience where families can explore at their own pace without feeling overwhelmed.

The Wave Waterpark, Coventry

For water-based fun, The Wave Waterpark offers modern facilities including a splash zone, wave pool, lazy river and slides. The Wave provides ‘Quiet Time’ swimming sessions at certain times.

Outdoor farms in the Midlands

If you’re looking to get outside to a local farm, there are multiple experiences across the Midlands.

Hatton Adventure World, in Warwick, combines farm animals, play areas, and open countryside space, giving children plenty of room to explore.

A smaller, calmer animal experience can be found at Lucky Tails Alpaca Farm in Atherstone, which is often ideal for families seeking a gentler, less crowded visit. Similarly, National Forest Adventure Farm in Burton-on-Trent offers outdoor play with plenty of space to spread out.

Drayton Manor Resort

For thrill-seeking families who still need structure and support, Drayton Manor Resort offers accessibility tools such as a Ride Access Pass, which helps reduce queue-related stress and makes the experience more manageable.

It’s worth noting that Drayton Manor offers free carer tickets when the valid documentation is provided.

Snoezelen

A very different but highly valuable option is Worcester Snoezelen, which provides dedicated multi-sensory environments designed specifically for relaxation, therapy, and calm engagement. Snoezelen uses light, sound, scent and textures, designed for people with autism, brain injuries or learning disabilities.

Cannock Chase

Nature-based days out can be especially beneficial for sensory regulation. Cannock Chase Forest offers vast woodland walks, cycling routes, and quiet areas where families can step away from busy environments.

National Trust sites

For consistently low-sensory outings, National Trust sites such as Clent Hills and Moseley Old Hall provide open landscapes, gentle walking routes, and a slower pace that many families find helpful.
